About the organization

National Honor Society logo

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school and students.

More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today,it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of NHS.  NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Chartered in 1998, the Park Hill South chapter of National Honor Society works to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in high school students.  Follow us on Twitter: @PHSouthNHS.

FORMS

JUNIORS AND SENIORS INTERESTED IN APPLYING:

Juniors and Seniors with a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA will be sent a letter in tutorial by September of the fall 2018 semester encouraging them to apply.  All prospective members MUST attend one (1) of the mandatory informational meetings provided, at which time an application will be checked out to the interested applicant. The process requires effort and planning, so we advise to attend a meeting as soon as possible. Dates and locations are forthcoming.

We encourage all prospective or future applicants or those eligible for collecting service to join our Remind contact loop by texting @phsNHSapps to 81010.  If/when our active members have extra service spots available for non-members, we love to send out alerts to YOU! You may also contact our sponsor with questions here.

Meeting space is limited, so students are asked to register for a meeting slot outside B105 in advance. Should no slot work for the student, the student is asked to schedule an alternative meeting time in person with Mrs. Bindel (sponsor) in B105 as early as possible. No applications will be released without having first attended a meeting. Applications will then be due back to the sponsor by mid-January (date TBD) with all elements (including service and activity verification) complete.  No late or partial applications will be accepted.

Questions?  Encourage your student to seek out Mrs. Bindel directly in Room B105 so that they may schedule an appointment. She will be happy to walk your student through any initial advice to prepare for the application process and advise on qualifying projects. In NHS, we encourage prospective members to be self-starters from the beginning of the process onward and take charge of their own application process.

Sophomores may not yet apply, BUT they are happily encouraged to get started early on the requirements: Participate in community service. Build a strong GPA and keep a clear record with good attendance. Get involved in school organizations and take on leadership.
